Let's give this a try! (From Nick J.)

This idea is Christi's all the way. Some of us had discussed the idea of having a place where we could discuss our student teaching with each other - a place to ask pedagogical questions, reflect on your experiences, discuss or simply vent. It's also a great opportunity to tell those funny stories that happen throughout the day that the people around you don't seem to care about!

Anyway, I thought I'd just put this up and see if anybody is interested. I, for one, would love to hear about what's happening with my peers more than 3 times this semester.

Well, I'll just say that I'm surprised that I've stayed awake long enough to write this post. I am so TIRED! For some reason, I had failed to recognize how early I would really have to wake up until I went to bed at 1 am on Sunday night (the night before my first day of student teaching). Now, in my defense, I've had to move up to the Chicagoland area on Saturday and I was still getting unpacked and settled. But, when I realized that I'd be waking up at 5:20... I almost died. And, I didn't leave my high school today until a little after 5 and then I did some work for tomorrow. It has taken until now to get ready to relax and hang out... but it's almost bed time!

Grr. The life of a teacher I suppose.

Everybody doing awesome out there?

  1. Cool idea! I've only had two days, but I've been in four different schools. One of them was by mistake, but still. Anyway, how do you post a blog, or can we just put comments?

  2. Hi everyone,
Jeff Novak here. I have had a GREAT first few days ranging from IHOP on Monday to later on that day FINALLY hearing from my middle school coop that I will be teaching with him the following day (hadn't heard from him since our interview 2 semesters ago despite my many emails). I'm set to start teaching literature at this point already. Pieces in my arsenal: Amparito Roca (lower band High school contest piece) and Calypso Bay with the middle school kids and Ode to Joy (piece written for the 5th graders through high school). Should be fun. Both of my coops are very nice and helpful and great and KNOWLEDGEABLE! Hope everyone is doing very well!

PS: I went to sleep last night at 8PM and 10PM on Monday (but I had a 2 hour nap)!

  3. I'm not doing naps after "work" again lol. I got home around 6pm on Tuesday, took a 2-hour nap maybe around 8, got up and went to bed "for good" around 11... and didn't fall asleep until about 4. Not fun when you need to be up by 5... Yep, from now on, it's 9pm-5pm for me. Nevermind that it's almost 10 right now...

I'll share more later, but for now I'll leave you with two related quotes from when we were teaching one of the 6th grade sectionals:

    Band Director: "What's an accent?"
6th Grader Clarinet: "Isn't that what British people have?"

    Band Director: "Play with accents!!"
6th Grader Flute: "(ashamed) I don't have one!"

  4. Jeff! I'm so jealous. The lower band at my junior high played that piece. It's so much fun!!! I'm singing it to myself right now...
